How to Producing Piston Rings
Whether you’re producing piston rings for a car or another type of engine, it’s important to understand the various factors that determine the quality of the product. Some of these include the shape of the ring, the type of metal used, and the process used for manufacturing it.

Compression ring
Several methods are used in making compression rings like CKS piston ring for pistons. The most important manufacturing step is the shaping process. This is where the ring is produced to conform to the cross-sectional profile of the cylinder liner.
The most basic function of the compression ring is to seal the cylinder from the bottom. This is achieved through a metal-on-metal sliding contact. The axial profile of the ring plays an important role in lubricant entrainment. The ring can be either plain faced or barrel faced.
The initial ring stock is a symmetrically shaped ring that has a nominal outside diameter of 6.494″:.001″. A few thou of the joint stock are removed, resulting in an oversize ring blank. The ring is then compressed into a fixture that allows it to be turned concentric.

Oil ring
Typically, an oil ring has two thin running surfaces. This helps the ring to scrape oil off of the cylinder wall and into the oil return slots. Some rings feature a hole in the radial center.
The main function of a piston ring is to seal the combustion gas in the cylinder. They are also a critical component of cooling the piston head. However, their performance can be affected by improper fuel timing, worn liner and contaminated fuel. The proper amount of oil is needed to reduce operating friction.
In the past, cast iron was used for piston rings. Nowadays, more demanding requirements have led to the increase in the use of steel rings. These rings are often coated with alloys and various surface treatments.
Wiper ring
Several methods are used to produce a piston ring wiper. One method uses a groove to support the ring and provides a spring force for the sealing ring. Another method is a tangential cut. This is especially effective in applications with vertical rods. In these cases, the oil wiper ring helps prevent leakage along the rod.
The tangentially cut oil wiper ring is particularly effective in preventing direct leakage along the rod. This prevents excess oil consumption. The design of a wiper ring also depends on the type of materials it is made of. The material must be durable, conformable, and non-abrasive. It can be fixed or flexible. In addition, it is important to have adequate side clearance to avoid bind-up in the groove.
An alternative wiper ring design uses a single groove. This is more likely to be used in a non-vacuum balance system.
Ductile iron
Whether you are re-building a passenger car gasoline engine, repairing a high performance racer, or rebuilding a diesel engine, you will need to know what materials are available for piston rings. The basic materials are steel, ductile iron, and cast iron. These are all strong and able to withstand high stress and temperature. However, the material used to manufacture the ring should provide the best combination of durability, oil control, and sealing.
While steel is stronger than ductile iron, it can be more expensive. In addition, steel rings are thinner than cast iron. This allows for more effective sealing and reduces blowby.
Both are also available in different edge profiles. Some manufacturers use thin rings, while others use thicker rings. They may be produced with higher tolerances or improved manufacturing processes.
Cast iron
Whether you’re building a motorcycle, truck, or any other kind of vehicle, you’ll want to get the best piston rings possible for your engine. If you don’t make sure you have a high quality ring, you’ll end up with a cylinder that’s worn out and doesn’t work right. You can’t tell which piston ring is the best by how it looks, but there are a few things you can do to find the perfect piston ring for your needs.
First, you’ll want to select a material with a good wear resistance. A piston ring as well as Ceramic chrome piston ring should also be strong enough to withstand heat. You’ll also need to consider what kind of surface coatings you’ll need to ensure a good seal.
A good cast iron piston ring will be able to withstand pressures of up to 5,000 PSI. If you’re looking for a reciprocating or rotary application, there are a variety of options to choose from.
